In the American/European bubble, we often hear claims that Christianity is shrinking. The world is moving on. The religious are a dying breed.

And to those within the bubble, it seems like it.

Yet this is the opposite of reality.

Christianity is surging worldwide.

Christianity is growing five times faster than atheism. If those numbers seem impossible, it might mean that you’ve been living in a bit of a bubble. Let me show you a glimpse of the world outside.

These four facts come from Lifeway Research:

1. Christianity is growing five times faster than atheism.

In 1970, there were 165 million atheists around the world.

Today, there are only 147 million atheists in the world.

Atheism shrunk at a dramatic rate throughout the 20th century. In the most recent few decades, atheism experienced minor growth, but only at the rate of 0.22%. Yet this growth is less than the 1% rate necessary to replace the population, further compounded by atheists having fewer children…
