Indeed, “domestic hearth” is their homestead — where people live.

They’re all already within their ancestral homeland. Most Israelites remained within Israel — within their ancestral homeland. But, like Joseph, they travel within Israel to a place where work is more abundant. Nazareth fed workers into the building of Sepphoris, providing abundant work for a carpenter/stone mason like Joseph. Yet he returned to his “domestic hearth” in Bethlehem, where his family was from, to register in the census.

Both Nazareth and Bethlehem are within his ancestral homeland of Israel.
