Thankfully, the Bible is my best defense. It’s view does not evolve. From the very beginning of the Law, God outlaws slavery:

“Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death. — Exodus 21:16

Slavery is a capital offense from the start.

You’re correct that theologians disagreed. They did so against the Bible’s clear statements.
